Tubular heaters are renowned for their versatility, durability, and reliability, making them highly adaptable for a wide range of industrial heating applications. Often considered the backbone of heating technology, these elements feature a resistance wire or coil precisely centered within a protective metal sheath. This coil is encased in magnesium oxide insulation, ensuring efficient heat transfer from the coil to the heating surface.
Tubular heaters come in various diameters to accommodate customized designs and adjustable watt densities, optimizing both performance and lifespan. The bending radius is carefully selected to maintain heater integrity and maximize efficiency. These heaters transfer heat through conduction, convection, and radiation, making them extremely effective in diverse environments. They are available in both single-ended and double-ended configurations to suit different installation needs.
The single-ended tubular heater has both electrical terminals positioned at one end, while the opposite end is sealed. Flexible lead wires, typically 12 inches (305 mm) long, are crimped to the terminals and protected by silicone-impregnated fiberglass sleeves for high-temperature resistance. These heaters can achieve watt densities up to 45 W/in² and operate at temperatures reaching 1200°F. Common sheath materials include INCOLOY and stainless steel to ensure durability.
In contrast, the double-ended tubular heater features a round cross-section and is highly flexible, especially suited for field bending. This design allows multiple resistor coils and thermocouples to be assembled within a single sheath, enabling precise internal temperature sensing and even offering three-phase heating capability within one element. These heaters support watt densities up to 120 W/in² and can withstand operating temperatures as high as 1800°F, with INCOLOY and stainless steel sheaths commonly used for enhanced performance and longevity.
