Thermocouples

Thermocouples are among the most widely used and adaptable temperature sensing devices available. Known for their simplicity and effectiveness, they are capable of accurately measuring temperatures across a broad range. A thermocouple is formed by joining two dissimilar metal wires at one end, creating a sensing junction. The other ends serve as the reference point. When the sensing junction is exposed to heat or cold, it produces a temperature difference that generates a small voltage. This voltage is interpreted and converted into temperature readings by controllers or monitoring devices.

Thermocouples are especially valued for their ability to measure extreme temperatures, typically ranging from -200°C to 2316°C (-328°F to 4200°F), making them ideal for demanding industrial and high-temperature environments. They are often more cost-effective and more tolerant of higher temperatures than RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors).

However, their performance may degrade over time due to exposure to harsh conditions or ageing, which can reduce accuracy as the thermoelectric properties of the metals change. Prolonged high-temperature use can also cause the wires to lose uniformity, affecting the signal.

Thermocouples are available in several types—such as J, K, T, and N—each suited for different applications and environments.
